Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday demanding immediate and unconditional release of imprisoned Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Addressing the human chain as the chief guest, BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury alleged that ruling Awami League had kept the party chairperson confined as she led the movement to re-establish democracy and as AL did not believe in democracy.
He said Khaleda was sent to jail much before the December 30 national elections as AL would have not been able to grab power by stealing votes if she was free.
He alleged that AL was involved in massive corruption and remained aloof from common people and, that is why, the government kept her in jail being jealous at the high popularity of Khaleda.
Referring to South African leader Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment and his final victory, he said that the oppressors could not keep Mandela in jail and the present government also would not be able to keep Khaleda in jail.
Presided over by Tanti Dal convener Abul Kalam Azad, the human chain was also addressed by BNP joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and central leaders – Selim Bhuiyan and Abdus Salam Azad, among others.
