Dhaka – A court here on Monday sent to jail Sylhet’s Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Partha Gopal Banik, who was shown arrested in a case filed on bribery and money-laundering charges after Tk 80 lakh was recovered from his residence.

Judge of the Senior Special Judges’ Court KM Imrul Kayes passed the order rejecting his bail plea after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) produced Partha before the court.

Gazi Shah Alam argued for the DIG while Advocate Mosharraf Hossain Kajal represented the ACC.

On Sunday, the ACC seized Tk 80 lakh from his house in the city’s Dhanmondi area after interrogating him at the ACC headquarters over corruption at Chittagong Central Jail.

ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Salauddin filed a case with ACC Dhaka Coordinated Office-1 on Monday afternoon over the money recovery, said its spokesman Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya.

Later, Partha, former DIG of Chittagong Central Jail, was shown arrested in the case.

ACC Secretary Muhammad Delwar Bakht at a press conference said they did not find any legal source of the money which was seized from Partha’s house. “We’re investigating the irregularities committed by Partha Gopal while he was in Chittagong Central Jail.”

Meanwhile, Prashanta Kumar Banik, senior jail super of Barishal Jail who served as senior jail super of Chittagong Central Jail when Partha was posted there, was interrogated over the corruption allegations for the last two days.
