Her Scandalous and Pusillanimous Power Grab, and Her (Ignominiously Indian and Police Backed) Rigged Elections With an All-Time High Record of Humongous Financial Corruption
By: Q M Jalal Khan
Part III of VI (The Noble and Lofty Khaleda, Phenomenally Popular, Yet Greatly Sacrificing, Subjected to Inhuman Suffering, Harassment, and Humiliation by the Extremely Acrimonious and Highly Unpopular Hasina)
Blogger Shamsul Alam describes the glory and greatness of Khaleda Zia in his Facebook post. According to him:
Mirza Fakhrul, dazed and daunted and confused and bewildered by Hasina’s unrelenting police torture and tyranny on him as well as all the rest of his party (from the very top level to mid-level workers and activists to the rank and file), claimed that “around 26 lakh BNP leaders and activists were framed in false cases and around 98,000 of them were in jail. ‘Now the party’s prime priority is freeing our jailed chairperson Khaleda Zia. If she can be released from jail, the democracy will be free,’ he added.” He claimed that Sheikh Hasina reduced the country into an ineffective one through her torture, tyranny, persecution, and vote rigging. So did the former Dhaka University Vice Chancellor and noted political scientist Professor Emajuddin Ahmad and the well-known left-leaning writer-scholar Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, who, respectively, said that there was absolutely no democracy in Bangladesh today and that the politics of the country became a stagnant pool of dirty water with silent poverty, desperation, destitution, and intellectual prostitution prevailing to the point of destruction of the nation. In the words of the above-quoted Balland,
The preparations for the election began at least in February of 2018 with the arrest of the leader of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia. The BNP although in a state of limbo and rendered defenseless since the election of 2014 when it boycotted the election, is the largest opposition to Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League. Countless members of the BNP and its supporters have been arrested, tortured and some killed, thus creating an atmosphere of terror and taboo associated with it. In fact, no one was allowed to question, let alone demonstrate any criticism of the Awami League, Sheikh Hasina and her family.
There are times I feel so disturbed that I can’t sleep. Among the other pressing worries and anxieties a worldly man is likely to have, unsettling thoughts of the old and frail, yet majestic and magnificent Begum Khaleda Zia suffering in isolated confinement keep on intruding. My situation is the same as that of a member of the BNP high command, who said he got teary at the health condition of Khaleda . It is now well over a year (since February 8, 2018) that Khaleda—a Voice of the Third World/‘খালেদা জিয়া : তৃতীয় বিশ্বের কণ্ঠস্বর,’ as a new book by that title, by Professor Emajuddin Ahmad and poet Abdul Hye Sikder, describes her –is languishing in jail, confined to a corner of an utterly damp, deserted and dilapidated dungeon.
Mother of democracy, as she has populary come to be known for her standing up for the patriotic, nationalist, and democratic causes that have been trodden upon and trampled down by the Hasina regime, the imprisoned Khaleda (born 1945) must be extremely lonely there, dying, bearing unbearable pain as the minutes and hours of her advanced age pass in the dark prison! Hardly any TV, newspapers, magazines, and books, hardly any meeting with people, hardly anyone to talk to or beside her to call her own, she is completely cut off from the outside world. The most popular politician of the country is totally shut out from her public life, more frustratingly, her personal, private and family life, too. What a shame that Bangladesh’s myopic and monolithic and cold and callous and cruel Sheikh Hasina is freely enjoying a self-created state despite the absence of fair logic, reason, and the rule of law, as does the Queen in Alice’s underground Wonderland! The media, not to speak of the lackey Awami journalists, is so much gagged and gobbled up by the fascist Hasina regime that no dailies or TV channels would dare to carry the news of the publication of the above-mentioned book on the great and glorious Khaleda Zia, published on 12 April 2019.
Can Mirza Fakhrul and the BNP leadership seek permission for weekly visits to Khaleda in her jail-hospital-jail to provide her some public solace and political company? For sure, the awfully autocratic and authoritarian Sheikh Hasina won’t ever allow this to happen. Fiendishly wielding her police power and the politically motivated partisan wand of the ACC (Anti-Corruption Commission) and the judiciary—a wand like that of the deceptive and hypocritical second traveller in Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown that “bore the likeness of a great black snake, so curiously wrought, that it might almost be seen to twist and wriggle itself like a living serpent”– the despotically ruling Hasina only knows how to ruthlessly oppress her only rival, the most popular Khaleda, and destroy the latter’s party, the BNP, the largest in Bangladesh. The old and honorable Khaleda is suffering for no fault of her own, for no reason of her own, absolutely none. She is an entirely innocent and noble lady of high stature—looking commandingly majestic, tenaciously towering and fantastically prime ministerial. She has been so even in her old age and in the crass and crappy Awami confinement.
She was so both in and out of office, before and after her entry into politics. Such a lofty and befitting image is beyond the wildest dreams of her archenemy the vindictive Hasina characterized by her crooked ways (remember Trump, in his democratic freedom of speech, describing Hillary as “crooked” and inciting his Republican crowd to chant “lock her up”?). Given her doubtful character as portrayed by Matiur Rahman Rentu in his book of legendary value, Hasina can only harbor a searing political vendetta against the noble Khaleda. Compared with Hasina whose politics is horribly clouded by her crooked ways and foul tricks, starting with her widely suspected complicity in the conspiracies behind the Pilkhana BDR massacre (25-26 February 2009), the Hefajote Islam massacre at the Motijheel Shapla Square (5-6 May 2013), International Crime Tribunal (ICT) hangings of many political leaders with whom she was once very closely attached, and the dubious and doubtful ways she got dozens of mega corruption charges against her quashed, Khaleda is of stellar fame and prominence in the people’s hearts and minds all across the board. As one fine critic of the fascistically ruling Hasina says, Khaleda, who, unlike, Hasina, personally never lost any elections in her life, is a live bomb that the horribly ruling Hasina is too afraid to let explode!
The great and glorious Khaleda’s son Tarique Rahman, himself a young leader of his own merit and calibre, suffering in exile in the UK, released a video message appealing to his countrymen to seek and press for his mother’s release. That’s all and that’s the best he can do from afar, forced to be away, as was his deceased younger brother Arafat Rahman, from their mother, the entire family having continuously been under intense and excruciating physical and psychological pain and pressure for years, since 1 November 2006 under the trio–Fakhruddin, Moinuddin, and Masududdin, and then from 2009 onwards under the totalitarian and Indian-backed one person—Sheikh Hasina. Her ruthless regime is after Tarique, too (as was the fox after the lamb), to further persecute him and completely and literally break his already broken bone. Naturally, after years of political isolation and mother-son separation, Tarique appeared to be shaken and subdued, having lost much of his former steam and stamina and spirit and demeanor. After all, he is in long exile under the legal constraints of the country he is in, but which is still better than the deadly brutalities that would certainly be inflicted upon him back home by the cold and cruel Hasina and her dangerous police and jaundiced judges. If I, as someone who is not a member of the Zia family, just a feeling and compassionate supporter of them from overseas, could feel so restless and perturbed, I can imagine how aggrieved and afflicted Tarique, as a loving son, must be.
Should the honest and dignified Khaleda surrender in anguish committing that she would retire from politics in order to walk out free from prison? Perhaps no, never. Let her die a heroic death in the Hasina jail of zulum (discrimination and persecution) for the cause of her people and the country. Difficult. Draining. Taking a toll on her health and mind. Still better to die in the Awami jail of zulum than surrender to the Awami zahilyya (injustice and ignorance). Along with Cordelia and her old father King Lear, both taken prisoners towards the end of Shakespeare’s play, the old and imprisoned former Prime Minister Khaleda, and her exiled son Tarique, unjustly sentenced to jail for life in absentia, may like to reflect and ruminate over:

CORDELIA: We are not the first
Who, with best meaning, have incurr’d the worst […]
Shall we not see these daughters and these sisters (referring to Goneril and Regan, her cruel and most ungrateful elder sisters)?

KING LEAR No, no, no, no! Come, let’s away to prison:
We two alone will sing like birds in the cage:
[…] so we’ll live,
And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh
At gilded butterflies, and hear poor rogues
Talk of court news; and we’ll talk with them too,
Who loses and who wins; who’s in, who’s out;
And take upon’s the mystery of things,
As if we were God’s spies: and we’ll wear out,
In a wall’d prison, packs and sects of great ones,
That ebb and flow by the moon. […]
KING LEAR Upon such sacrifices, my Cordelia,
The gods themselves throw incense. (King Lear, Act V Scene III)

The authoritarian Hasina can lavish a lot from the public coffers on her fellow Awami politicians such as Obaidul Quader for their medical treatment at home and abroad, but hardly any for who is no less than Bangladesh’s “uncrowned” and “unofficial” true and permanent prime minister Khaleda, mother of democracy and humanity, the woman close to the heart of overwhelming millions, who is rotting in jail by the hour and counting her long and lonely days as if one day for her were no less than 30 days! Forced to stay confined to her own home at times and to her political office premises at other times by the tyrannical Hasina’s sand-and-cement-truck police and, finally, to a damn, damp, dark and desolate jail, time hangs heavy on the nobly and patriotically sacrificing Khaleda, born free on 15 August 1945 but in chains during the cruel and callous Hasina reign.
Although the murderer Macbeth thinks that he cannot be killed by any man born of a woman, as predicted by the supernatural witches, he soon learns that Macduff, who slays him offstage at Dunsinane castle, was “from his mother’s womb / Untimely ripped,” meaning that Macduff was born by a caesarean section. In other words, all are born of a woman, caesarian or not, except, of course, the first man and the first woman, Adam and Eve. Isn’t Hasina born of a woman too? Didn’t she have a father? Isn’t she a mother herself? Isn’t she a daughter of somebody? Won’t she die one day? How could she be that cold and cruel and heartless as to put others in dire peril for no reason? Is she devoid of human compassion and considerations? Doesn’t she need God’s/Allah the Almighty’s grace and mercy and kindness and forgiveness when she dies, whether she dies a normal or an accidental death? If she does (and like everybody else she must), why would she inflict so much terror and torture on others, why would she unleash so much villainy and tyranny on others? Why would she commit so much election fraud and vote dacoity? Why so many illegal arrests, unlawful detentions, indiscriminate remands, abominable bribes, unfair and inhuman imprisonments, enforced disappearances, and judicial as well as extrajudicial (crossfire) killings of political leaders and also innocent citizens Why so many disappearances and abductions to leave no more tears in the eyes of thousands of mothers and fathers and wives and children? Where have fled Hasina’s womanly, motherly, sisterly, and human qualities? All gone by the fact that she has become a total power drunk and power addict by default? Why should her situation be so coal-black and take no other hue?

[1] Regardless of tyranny and torture, Mirza Fakhrul and the entire BNP high command, full of old and sick and senile and cowardly men, are extremely weak and ineffective (except a few like Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman, Shah Muazzem Hossein, Col. Oli, Ashifa Ashrafi Papia, Rumin Farhana, Afroza Abbas, Muzzaem Husain Alal, and Zainul Abedin Faruk, among others). All of them, good for nothing and busy for nothing, should be replaced by stronger, more appealing, and more charismatic leaders. The BNP should go for a collective leadership on a rotation basis and induct Col Oli into the party as its General Secretary. [1] I’m far from defending those comments made by Trump about Hillary. I’ve just mentioned them to refer to the free political and democratic atmosphere existing in the USA that is completely banished and finds itself in a state of complete lunar dark in Hasina’s Bangladesh. Anyone who is not a supporter of Trump would say that he has difficulty behaving in a civil fashion. He, unfortunately, assigns nasty names to anyone he feels threatened by. Hillary won the popular vote and Trump simply can’t get over with that fact. As a fine critic of Trump claims, facts often seem to have little or no place in his view of the world. As such, there are many similarities between Trump and Hasina.
