Actress Meera Chopra, who is all geared up for her upcoming film, ‘Section 375’, has already impressed her fans with the glimpse of her stunning performance in the trailer of the film.
The actress, who plays a rape survivour in the movie, has left no stone unturned to get into the skin of her character. In an exclusive tête-à-tête with ETimes, Meera spoke about the challenges of playing a rape survivour, working with Akshaye Khanna and Richa Chadha and her bond with cousin, Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
How did ‘Section 375’ happen?
I gave lots of auditions and look tests. That is how it happened. When I heard the script for the first time, I had taken it to my heart that I have to crack this.
How challenging was it to play a rape victim in the film?
Usually what we do is we act and we get away with it. But I could not have done this with Ajay Bahl sir. He would have thrown me out. He knows when you are acting and when you are completely in the character. They made me meet a lot of rape survivours to understand the character.
That sort of really helped me as I used to feel that rape survivours would be angry and sad but I figured out that they have endured so much in life, fighting for justice that they become very strong and nothing bothers them. I met some strong women who could go up to any extent to fight for justice.
What are your thoughts on the stereotypes attached to a rape survivour in society?
I met a woman who told me that after the unfortunate incident a lot of her friends stopped talking to her. People think twice even to be with her. This is a one really sad stigma.
These kinds of women should be supported. That is one of the reasons why they become so strong. When you meet such people you tend to change yourself. This movie has changed me so much. I have started seeing things from a different perspective.
How difficult was it to get in and out of the character you were essaying?
Getting in was not very difficult because the prep was very strong. Ajay sir knew exactly what he wanted from me. His research was very strong.
I am a kind of an actor who switches on and switches out very easily. However, getting out of this character was difficult. We shot for the rape scene for three days. It is an intense rape scene. We shot for that part at the end of the film. After the shoot when I went back home, I messaged one of my producers saying that I feel like I have been raped. It was a very traumatic experience. When you shoot for something for three days, you get into that character.
I was just at my home in Delhi. I was not talking to anybody. After some days, I told myself I have to make a way to get out of this. It was a state which nobody from my family understood.
How was your experience shooting with Richa Chadha and Akshaye Khanna?
Working with Akshaye Khanna and Richa Chadha was amazing. I am a huge fan of Akshaye sir. I go and watch his movies in theatres because he hardly does any movies nowadays. Initially, I was very intimidated by him. They both are seniors and they helped me a lot. Many times they would come to me with suggestions of how I should pull off some scenes. They are amazing co-stars.
Are you in touch with your cousin Priyanka Chopra Jonas?
Yes, I am in touch with Priyanka Chopra but not very often. There was more communication between us before she shifted to the US. However, she knows what is happening in my life and with my work. Source: ETimes
