Leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday said former finance minister M Saifur Rahman would remain alive among the countrymen through his works.
Mentioning that Saifur had taken multilateral development programmes for first time in the country to expand its financial power, they said that the system of open market economy was developed in the country led by Saifur Rahman during the BNP regime.
Saifur worked for the country’s development staying beyond the party and personal opinion. He never stepped back in taking any decision for the development of the country, they added.
They came up with the observations while addressing a programme arranged by Marhum M Saifur Rahman Smriti Parishad, Sylhet to commemorate him at Kazi Nazrul Auditorium in the city’s Rikabibazar in the afternoon marking his 10th death anniversary.
Political analyst and Dhaka University law teacher Asif Nazrul spoke at the programme as main speaker with Sylhet mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury in the chair.
Leaders of the BNP and its associate organisations also spoke at the programme followed by a prayer session.
Earlier in the morning, leaders of the BNP city unit led Ariful Haque Chowdhury placed a wreath at Saifur Rahman’s grave at Bahar Mardan in Moulvibazar marking the day.
The district BNP also arranged a prayer session in the mosque at Hazrat Shahjalal’s (R) shrine after Asr prayers.
