Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday alleged that prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina breached the law by removing Bangladesh Chhatra League’s president Rezwanul Huq Chowdhury and general secretary Golam Rabbani.

At an emergency press conference, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also alleged that the government high ups were involved in September 12 court stay order on holding national council session of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and said that it was nothing but a bad instance of fascist rule.

Rizvi, referring to the Representation of the  People’s Order and the section 25(1) of AL constitution submitted to the Election Commission, said Chhatra League was a brotherly and independent organisation of Awami League and its interference into Chhatra League’s activity was absolutely illegal. ‘They only can advise them Chhatra League,’ he said.

Referring to AL general secretary Obaidul Quader’s September 15 claim that prime minister Sheikh Hasina was monitoring Chhatra League activities and the leaders were forced to resign for breaching discipline, Rizvi said that it proved that the prime minister and the Awami League were controlling Chhatra League.

The BNP leader said that a Dhaka court on September 12, without giving BNP leaders chance to defend themselves, hurriedly stayed Chhatra Dal council session scheduled for September 14, when Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were on campaign with enthusiasm. ‘It proves that the government high ups were involved in the decision.’

‘It is another unprecedented and tainted chapter of Sheikh Hasina’s political vengeance,’ he said.

He mentioned that six AL leaders led by its general secretary Obaidul Quader were given responsibility to select the new leaders in the 29th council session of Chhatra League through which Rezwanul and Rabbani became president and general secretary.

He wanted to know whether the Dhaka court that stayed Chhatra Dal council session would issue show cause notice to Sheikh Hasina and AL leaders and stay their decision if anyone go to court challenging their order as the court did to BNP leaders regarding Chhatra Dal’s council session.

‘Awami League breached the RPO and section 25(1) of the party’s revised constitution. Why the court and the election commission are silent now? … Take action prescribed in the law against them. Why are you blind now?’ he said adding that the court would have to be held accountable to people’s court if they fail to deal with it.

BNP vice chairman Ahmed Azam Khan, joint secretary general and Dhaka south city president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and publicity secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, among others, were present at the news conference.
