Main opposition BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Tuesday that the government used all its might and the state machinery to destroy the opposition and democracy.
Charing a memorial discussion on ‘Tariqul Islam: Life and Movement’ organised by Tariqul Islam Smriti Sangsad at National Press Club, Fakhrul said that the government filed false and fabricated cases against 26 lakh BNP leaders and activists and made over 500 others victims of enforced disappearance and crippled over 1,000.
He said that the reign of repression let loose against BNP leaders and activists by the Awami League regime surpassed Pakistani oppression. He said, ‘The government used all its might and the state machinery to destroy the opposition and democracy after grabbing state power on the ominous night of December 29, 2018.’

He reiterated the demand of holding fresh election under a neutral government and election commission to restore a government of the people.
The discussion was also addressed by BNP leaders Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Selima Rahman, Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku, Barkat Ullah Bulu, Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Habib-Un Nabi Khan Sohel and Tariqul’s wife and Jashore district BNP convener Nargis Begum.
