A student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology was found murdered at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall on Monday.

Police believed that Abrar Fahad, 21, a second year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was tortured to death on Sunday night.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional police commissioner Krishnapad Roy said that the Detective Branch of Police and Crime Investigation Department seized some evidences from the crime scene that suggested that Abrar was tortured.

Police detained BCL BUET unit vice-president Mustakim Fahad, general secretary Mehedi Hasan Russel, information and research affairs secretary Anik Sarker, and sports secretary Meftahul Islam Zion for interrogation as police investigators believed that some leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, might have link to the murder.

A number of BUET students, who last saw Abrar on Sunday evening, said that some BCL BUET unit leaders and activists took Abrar to the room number 2011 in the evening and later his body was recovered from a corridor of the dormitory early Monday.

Following the murder, students of Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University held demonstrations on their respective campuses.

A large number of BUET students brought out processions on the campus demanding punishment of those who were involved in the murder.

General students of Dhaka University held a protest rally in front of Raju Sculpture and brought out a procession from the same place that paraded different roads on the campus and ended on BUET premises.

Progressive Students Alliance of Dhaka University brought out another procession on the campus that paraded different campus roads.

Students of Jahangirnagar University held a demonstration at the Shaheed Minar on their campus demanding immediate arrest of the murderers of Abrar.

BUET BCL unit assistant secretary Ashikul Islam Bitu told New Age that some leaders of BUET BCL unit took Abrar to the room to interrogate him about his involvement with the politics of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat Islami-backed student organisation.

He claimed that they found evidence of his involvement with Shibir politics after checking his cell phone, laptop and facebook profile.

At that point he left the room and he did not know if the BCL men tortured Abrar, Bitu claimed.

The victim’s family said that Abrar was not involved in any political activities.
