Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday said the government’s circular issued on Friday about print and electronic media was restrictive measure to curb freedom of the press.

Addressing a rally in front of the party’s central office in capital’s Naya Paltan, the party senior joint secretary general  Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, ‘the circular was issued so that no news against ruling party’s people and corrupt officials of the administration could be published.’

Home ministry on Thursday issued the circular mentioning that it was noticing confusing reports on different important persons, political persons, businessmen, government officials and institutions on print and electronic media for which confusion was creating among the people.

The circular asked to publish objective and informative reports on the sensitive issues after proper scrutiny.

Rizvi said that the government issued the circular in fear of publishing list of the government’s top corrupt ones after publishing the names of a few small fries arrested in the so-called anti-corruption drive.

He alleged the mass-media in the country was not enjoying freedom. ‘Even though, the government is formulating black laws one after another in a bid to curb freedom of media,’ he said.
